A Japanese traveler may convert a price into yen, choose the big box, check the phone and switch to the small one. Another calculation brings back the big box. Before the shopkeeper, the souvenirs are already making a little journey of their own.
A Japanese traveler may order in another language, then finish with an automatic “arigatou.” An attempt to try again produces another “arigatou.” The server has already handed over the cup. The thank-you is taking longer than the order.
