A barista’s “How are you?” may take a moment to get an answer from a Japanese traveler. By then, the barista has asked which pastry they want. “I’m fine” briefly becomes a choice of pastry. Conversation can change lanes surprisingly quickly.
A Japanese traveler may order in another language, then finish with an automatic “arigatou.” An attempt to try again produces another “arigatou.” The server has already handed over the cup. The thank-you is taking longer than the order.
