When a server demonstrates a dish’s name, Japanese travelers may repeat it together. The server tries it slowly; the whole table joins in again. Someone who came to take an order has briefly found themselves leading a very small pronunciation class.
Japanese travelers may turn together when they hear Japanese on the street. Their local friend looks too, only to find two strangers chatting to each other. Nobody called anyone’s name, but for a moment the whole group seems to have answered.
