JAPANESE ARUARU
As hotel staff explain a remote, a Japanese traveler may nod at every button. Power, temperature, fan speed: the pointing finger and the listening head find the same rhythm. A quick demonstration can acquire a little choreography of its own.
When a server demonstrates a dish’s name, Japanese travelers may repeat it together. The server tries it slowly; the whole table joins in again. Someone who came to take an order has briefly found themselves leading a very small pronunciation class.

At the airport, a Japanese traveler with a heavy bag may start putting on jackets from the suitcase. Before the check-in agent, the bag gets lighter and the traveler gains layers. Nothing has left the trip; the weight has simply found another place to sit.

A local friend may raise a camera and find every Japanese traveler ready with a peace sign. A new spot, another photo, the same hands. The scenery keeps changing, but one small part of the picture travels faithfully from place to place.

While a local friend shows them the supermarket, Japanese travelers may gather around a snack they know from home. They lean toward the price tag and take a photo. After traveling so far, the discovery is a familiar snack with an unfamiliar price.

A Japanese traveler may bow on leaving a shop, wave, walk a few steps and turn back for another wave. The shopkeeper raises a hand again. The purchase is complete, but the goodbye still has a few trips to make between door and pavement.

A Japanese traveler may turn a translated message toward someone, only for the phone’s screen to rotate too. Turning it back triggers another spin. Both people tilt their heads: before the words line up, at least the readers have found the same angle.

A server asks whether to add ice, and Japanese travelers may turn inward for a quick discussion in Japanese. Heads gather; one person turns back with “Yes.” A question about one glass has briefly passed through a whole-table meeting.

When a local offers a hand, a Japanese traveler may begin a bow while also reaching to shake it. Head down, hand forward. The other person tilts a little too, and one greeting briefly acquires two different directions.

At check-in, a Japanese traveler may turn their passport toward the receptionist just as the receptionist reaches to turn it too. Both hands briefly hover over the same page. After a long journey, the passport has one more little rotation to make.

Before calling family in Japan, a traveler may count on their fingers beside a clock. Add a few hours, subtract them, start again. Their local friend sees exactly the same clock, but what to call this afternoon back home remains under discussion.

A Japanese traveler’s suitcase may begin the trip with neat packing cubes. When a local friend helps pack for home, the final step can involve both of them pressing down the lid. Separating everything has become a project in bringing it all together.

Before checkout, a Japanese traveler may inspect every drawer. Their local roommate points out one that nobody used; it gets checked anyway. Some corners of the room receive their very first visit just as the guests are about to leave.
