JAPANESE ARUARU
A local friend may arrive to find Japanese travelers comparing different weather apps. Rain, sun, cloud: each phone has a proposal. Outside, the sky is already clear. Inside, the pre-departure meeting has yet to agree on the weather.
Japanese travelers may turn together when they hear Japanese on the street. Their local friend looks too, only to find two strangers chatting to each other. Nobody called anyone’s name, but for a moment the whole group seems to have answered.

A server may turn back to find a Japanese traveler photographing dinner while their companion’s fork hangs in midair. One plate gets turned, then comes another shot. Tonight, the person holding the camera gets to decide when dinner starts.

A barista’s “How are you?” may take a moment to get an answer from a Japanese traveler. By then, the barista has asked which pastry they want. “I’m fine” briefly becomes a choice of pastry. Conversation can change lanes surprisingly quickly.

A Japanese traveler may show a friend the unfamiliar name on their coffee cup. The friend promptly tries it out on them. A simple coffee stop can come with an unexpected extra: a new name for the rest of the afternoon.

A Japanese traveler may quietly rehearse an order while queuing. At the counter, the server points to the menu: “This one?” A nod completes the order. Only the friend behind them heard the carefully rehearsed line.

Hand a Japanese traveler a large-looking medium drink and they may compare it with a friend. Then both spread their hands to imagine the large. The server gets a demonstration of a drink nobody has actually ordered.

A Japanese traveler choosing office souvenirs may study the back of a box and count on their fingers. Another box, another count. The shop assistant is selling sweets, but so far, nobody has asked about the flavor.

Share a hotel room with a Japanese friend and the bed cushions may move to the chair each night. After housekeeping, they are back on the bed. For the roommate, the evening entertainment is the same tiny removal service, again.

Used to automatic doors, a Japanese traveler may wait in front of a perfectly ordinary handle. One step back, then forward. Nothing. The next person opens it, and suddenly both of them are on their way in.

A Japanese traveler may nod and bow while calling the hotel. The person on the phone cannot see it, but a friend in the room can. Even without hearing a word, the friend gets a visual signal that the call is ending.

While someone photographs a group of Japanese travelers, the group may bow before the camera is quite finished. One extra shot, just in case. After the smiling portrait comes an orderly row of the tops of their heads.

Tell a Japanese traveler to enjoy the trip, and you might hear “You too!” A few steps later, they turn back with a sheepish smile. The server is still behind the counter, having just been wished a wonderful holiday at work.
